Review: Jersey Boys in Pittsburgh

This particular evening started off meeting a friend for dinner at a downtown eatery. The sights, the sounds and the people! The Cultural District is amazing and I just love every opportunity to par-take in what it has to offer. After dinner it was off to see Jersey Boys at the Benedum. Sure, I grew up listening to the hits of the Four Seasons – Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Walk Like a Man – who hasn’t. What I didn’t expect was a performance like no other. The performance revealed the story behind the music and the hits. The talent on the stage this particular night was amazing. During the first hour of the show – I truly thought that the performers were actually lip-syncing! They sounded just like to real Four Seasons. Was I wrong! Matthew Dailey who plays Tommy DeVito, performs and narrates as he takes you on their journey of how the Four Seasons became one of the top selling singing groups of their time.

It all starts with Tommy, and the band he formed earlier struggling to make a name themselves. Through the years, the group has gone through several name changes. Then Tommy convinces Frankie Valli to join his group due to his unique sound. Aaron De Jesus who plays Frankie Valli was spot on. You actually thought that you are watching the real Frankie Valli perform live on stage – giving me goose bumps as he belts out the songs. Once Bob Goudio, played by Drew Seeley, joined the group and added his talent as singer/songwriter – the hits we know started rolling in. Believe me, the drama that encompassed this group gave him plenty of material to write songs! But like any friendship / partnership, the Four Seasons had their share of triumph and defeat as they battled their personal demons. It’s funny how things really do come full circle.

In the end, everyone was one their feet dancing, singing with the group. What a memorable night! I could have listened to them all night long!
